AI visibility and SEO: what is genuinely different?

AI visibility is not a replacement for SEO. It adds answer-level observation to the technical, content and authority work that already helps people and search systems discover a business.

What Google says

Google's current guidance states that the same foundational SEO practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. There are no separate technical requirements or special markup needed to appear in those features. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet, but eligibility does not guarantee inclusion.

What conventional SEO measures

SEO work commonly examines crawling, indexing, search demand, rankings, traffic, conversions, internal linking, content quality and external authority. Those signals remain valuable because web-grounded AI experiences need accessible, understandable sources to retrieve.

What an AI visibility audit adds

An answer-level audit samples recommendation, comparison and problem-led prompts across selected products. It records whether the business appears, how it is described, which alternatives appear and which sources are visibly linked. This can reveal positioning and factual-consistency issues that a ranking report alone does not show.

Avoid “GEO magic”

No public documentation supports a universal checklist that guarantees mentions across every model or assistant. Structured data can help search engines understand page content, but Google does not guarantee a rich result or inclusion in AI features. Helpful, reliable content and sound technical SEO are a more defensible foundation than invented ranking factors.

A practical combined workflow

  1. Fix crawlability, indexability and core website quality.
  2. Map real buyer questions and decision criteria.
  3. Publish clear service, comparison, FAQ and evidence pages where they genuinely help users.
  4. Build accurate third-party profiles and earn relevant coverage.
  5. Sample AI answers over time and compare observations with search and conversion data.
